Bob Dylan Tell Tale signs
...Tell Tale Signs is less an anthology than an album in its own right. It seems designed to tell a story that sharpens and expands the vista of mortal and cultural disintegration that has been the chief theme of 1997's Time Out of Mind, 2001's Love and Theft, and 2006's Modern Times - perhaps the most daring music he's ever made. Tell Tale Signs makes plain that Dylan knows the caprices of the world he lives in, now more than ever.
Dignity ( MTV Unplugged 1994)Los Angeles Times' Robert Hilburn
Bob Dylan's latest collection of material from his musical back pages, "Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8," is a rich, revealing look at how this master songwriter put together one of the most dramatic creative renaissances in pop history...."Tell Tale Signs" is not just "extra" Dylan. It's essential Dylan.
Most of the Time (with David Lindley)The eighth instalment of Dylan's Bootleg Series covers the years spanning his 1989 return to form with Oh Mercy up to the present day, a period in which he managed to conquer a long-standing blight of writer's block, establish himself as the pre-eminent repository of American roots-music forms, and ultimately find the route to the Indian summer of Time Out of Mind, "Love and Theft" and Modern Times....It's a remarkable collection...
Ring them Bells (Dublin 13 Sept.200)There's stuff here that leaves the listener wondering: why have we never heard this before? What possessed him, for instance, to excise Red River Shore from his Time Out of Mind album? It's a haunting classic. Ditto the wistful Born in Time (from the Oh Mercy sessions)...what's captured here is the restless, questing creative spirit of the man. He never stops.
Someday BabyIf you love the trilogy of Time Out Of Mind, Love And Theft and Modern Times you're going to adore this. It lays bare the process that led Dylan to not only revisit the work that got him fired up in the first place but remake them in his own image: the Carter Family (Tell Ol' Bill) amongst many others...As a companion to his best work from the period this is essential. It even stands as a fine album on its own—the work of a man obviously in love with his muse once more, and totally unafraid of fessin' up to his roots. Beautiful, brave and beguiling.
God Knows (Praag 16 Juli 1994) ROLLING STONE: "...Tell Tale Signs is less an anthology than an album in its own right. Tell Tale Signs makes plain that Dylan knows the caprices of the world he lives in, now more than ever." Born in Time (Nashville 8 nov 1994) SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE: "...there had never been anything quite like Bob Dylan in the 1960s, and there's nothing quite like him today."donderdag 26 maart 2009

1 Tangled up in Blue
The song was written by Dylan and produced by David Zimmerman, Dylan's brother. Released as a single, it reached No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song concerns relationships and contains different narrative perspectives. Dylan has altered the lyrics in subsequent performances, changing the point of view and details in the song.(Wikipedia)
2 Simple twist of Fate
The complete recording sessions of "Simple Twist of Fate" were released on the deluxe edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14: More Blood, More Tracks in 2018. The first take of the song was recorded on September 16, 1974, and was also included on the single-CD and 2-LP versions of the album.(Wikipedia)
3 Your a big girl now
Like most songs in Blood on the tracks, "You're a Big Girl Now" tells a story about two lovers that is near to get to an end. In the lyrics, the narrator begs his lover to give him one more chance and forgive him along the five verses.(Wikipedia)
4 Idiot Wind
Some reviewers have speculated that the song is a reflection on Dylan's personal life, and in particular, on his deteriorating relationship with his wife Sara Dylan. In contrast, Dylan has denied that it is autobiographical. Like the album it was included on, the song received a mixed critical reception on release. Commentators have acclaimed both the lyrics and performance in the intervening years, and the song was given prominence from some critics' assessments as one of Dylan's best.(Wikipedia)
5 You gonna make me lonesome when you goThe Daily Telegraph
described the song as "Dylan's most fully realised masterpiece, crammed
with lyrical blood and thunder and piercing observations." According
to the Telegraph, it is the album's "simplest, breeziest song –
yet it remains heartbreaking in its almost carefree surrender to the
inevitability of romantic pain.(Wikipedia)
Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks (1)
Bob Dylan once introduced this album's opening song, "Tangled Up in Blue," onstage as taking him ten years to live and two years to write. It was, for him, a pointed reference to the personal crisis -- the collapse of his marriage to Sara Lowndes -- that at least partly inspired this album, Dylan's best of the 1970s. In fact, he wrote all of these lyrically piercing, gingerly majestic folk-pop songs in two months, in mid-1974. He was so proud of them that he privately auditioned almost all of the album, from start to finish, for pals and peers including Mike Bloomfield, David Crosby and Graham Nash before cutting them in September -- in just a week with members of the bluegrass band Deliverance. But in December, Dylan played the record for his brother David in Minneapolis, who suggested recutting some songs with local musicians. The final Blood was a mix of New York and Minneapolis tapes; Dylanologists still debate the merits of the two sessions. Yet no one disputes the album's luxuriant tangle of guitars, the gritty directness in Dylan's voice and the magnificent confessional force of his writing: in the existentialist jewel "Simple Twist of Fate," the wrung-dry goodbye of "If You See Her, Say Hello" and the sharp-tongued opprobrium of "Idiot Wind," his greatest put-down song since "Like a Rolling Stone."

Blonde on Blonde (Part 1)
All Times bezet Blonde on Blonde veelzeggend plaats nummer 9.
track 1 Rainy Day Woman 12 & 35 ( Woodstock 1994)
- Bob Dylan Lyrics.
"They'll stone you" in elk complet van de song, plus het refreine "Well, I would not feel so all alone--everybody must get stoned!"was aanleiding voor verschillende Amerikaanse radiostations en deBBC het nummer te verbannen. Ze beschouwden het als een ,,drugsong,,
.
- Bob Dylan Lyrics.
track 3 Visions of Johanna (1966)
.
- Bob Dylan Lyrics.
On the Virginity of the Virgin Mary & Johanna Southcott".
track 4 One of us must Know(sooner of later)
.
- Bob Dylan Lyrics.
track 5 I want You (9-july 1998 Collegno Torino)
.
- Bob Dylan Lyrics.

Blond on Blonde (Part2)
Miljoenen jongeren omarmden The Times They Are A-Changin'.
track 11 Absolutely sweet Mary
- Bob Dylan Lyrics
In een interview, gepubliseerd in Paul Zollo's book Songwriters on Songwriting, Expanded Fourth Edition (New York: Da Capo Press, 1997), geeft Dylan een idee hoe hij de song ziet en geeft uitleg over de zin "yellow railroad":
-
-
- That's about as complete as you can be. Every single letter in that line. It's all true. On a literal and on an escapist level.... Getting back to the yellow railroad, that could be from looking someplace. Being a performer, you travel the world. You're not just looking out of the same window everyday. You're not just walking down the same old street. So you must make yourself observe whatever. But most of the time it hits you. You don't have to observe. It hits you. Like, "yellow railroad" could have been a blinding day when the sun was so bright on a railroad someplace and it stayed on my mind.... These aren't contrived images. These are images which are just in there and have got to come out.
-
trtack 12 4th Time Around
- Bob Dylan Lyrics
track 13 Obviously 5 Believers
Memphis Minnie's "Me and My Chauffer Blues", Chuck Berry's "I Want to Be Your Driver" het bekende "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". Muddy Waters' "Trouble No More." Verder komt de openingszin"Early in the morning" overeen met Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman."
track 14 Sad eyed Lady of the Lowlands
- Bob Dylan Lyrics
Op het Album Desire staat het lied Sara waarin Bob zingt: " Staying up for nights in the Chelsea Hotel writing Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands for you.

Bob Dylan Kopenhagen
Tears Of Rage
We carried you in our arms
On Independence Day,
And now you'd throw us all aside
And put us on our way.
Oh what dear daughter 'neath the sun
Would treat a father so,
To wait upon him hand and foot
And always tell him, "No"?
Tears of rage, tears of grief,
Why must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know
We're so alone
And life is brief.
We pointed out the way to go
And scratched your name in sand,
Though you just thought it was nothing more
Than a place for you to stand.
Now, I want you to know that while we watched,
You discover there was no one true.
Most ev'rybody really thought
It was a childish thing to do.
Tears of rage, tears of grief,
Must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know
We're so low
And life is brief.
It was all very painless
When you went out to receive
All that false instruction
Which we never could believe.
And now the heart is filled with gold
As if it was a purse.
But, oh, what kind of love is this
Which goes from bad to worse?
Tears of rage, tears of grief,
Must I always be the thief?
Come to me now, you know
We're so low
And life is brief.
I Want You
The guilty undertaker sighs,
The lonesome organ grinder cries,
The silver saxophones say I should refuse you.
The cracked bells and washed-out horns
Blow into my face with scorn,
But it's not that way,
I wasn't born to lose you.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.
The drunken politician leaps
Upon the street where mothers weep
And the saviors who are fast asleep,
They wait for you.
And I wait for them to interrupt
Me drinkin' from my broken cup
And ask me to
Open up the gate for you.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.
Now all my fathers, they've gone down
True love they've been without it.
But all their daughters put me down
'Cause I don't think about it.
Well, I return to the Queen of Spades
And talk with my chambermaid.
She knows that I'm not afraid
To look at her.
She is good to me
And there's nothing she doesn't see.
She knows where I'd like to be
But it doesn't matter.
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.
Now your dancing child with his Chinese suit,
He spoke to me, I took his flute.
No, I wasn't very cute to him,
Was I?
But I did it, though, because he lied
Because he took you for a ride
And because time was on his side
And because I . . .
I want you, I want you,
I want you so bad,
Honey, I want you.

bob Dylan Live in Duitsland
All Along the Watchtower (Nürnberg, Germany, 24-April-2002)
Every grain of Sand (Jahrhunderthalle, Frankfurt am Main, Germany Thursday, 6th November 2003)
Herman: There's a song on Shot Of Love, Every Grain Of Sand, which is about as a healing song as I ever heard from you. It's a beautiful, beautiful song.
Dylan: Oh, yeah, I wrote that last summer.
Herman: Is that what you mean by hopefully healing music?
Dylan: I would hope so.
The Dave Herman Interview, London, July 2 1981. "That was an inspired song that came to me," verteld Dylan. "It wasn't really too difficult. I felt like I was just putting words down that were coming from somewhere else, and I just stuck it out."
